Almost a month into his role with the Smarter Contracts team, we caught up with Tim Clifford, Smarter Contracts’ Director of DevSecOps.
We sat down with Tim to learn more about him and his background as well as the educational and career journey’s he has been on, leading up to working at Smarter Contracts.
Tim, tell us a little about your background
My debut in the world of work was nothing short of a neighbourhood sensation. I delivered those colossal business directory books to every doorstep in our friendly little corner of the world. Trust me, I've never done more bicep curls in my life, and I swear I became an expert in the art of book-balancing acrobatics.
Shortly after mastering the fine art of directory book distribution, I made my way to the local builders' merchants, where I became a connoisseur of nails, nuts, bolts, and the mysterious world of 'thingamajigs.' It was like a crash course in deciphering cryptic customer requests: 'I need that, uh... whatchamacallit...'.
Looking back, those early jobs may not have been where I wanted to be, but they were a hilarious and humble start to my career journey. They taught me the ropes, the quirks, and the humour of the working world. I've got some colourful tales and a hearty appreciation for the value of good old-fashioned arduous work!"
My career journey has taken me through quite a range of industries, including construction, hospitality, web development, startups, digital agency services, software development and hosting services, as well as the dynamic realms of cybersecurity and data privacy.
Amazing! And what about education, where did you go to university?
Recently, I accomplished a significant milestone in my academic journey by graduating from the prestigious University of Oxford, where I earned a Master of Science degree in Software and Systems Security. This educational endeavour was not only a culmination of years of hard work and dedication but also a transformative experience that deepened my understanding of the intricate world of cybersecurity.
This journey wasn't just about burning the midnight oil; it was a wild roller coaster of hard work and fun. I had the privilege of being mentored by some of the brightest minds in the field, allowing me to delve into innovative research, the latest industry trends, and advanced methodologies in software and systems security. The program challenged me to think critically, adapt to rapidly evolving cyber threats, and develop innovative solutions to safeguard digital ecosystems.
My time at Oxford has also instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility. As a graduate in Software and Systems Security, I recognise the increasing importance of cybersecurity in a world where digital threats continue to grow in complexity and frequency. I am committed to using the knowledge and skills I have acquired to contribute to the ongoing battle against threats, protecting the data and privacy of individuals and organisations alike.
Wow! Congratulations - what an achievement. So, how did Oxford University lead to Smarter Contracts?
I found my way to Smarter Contracts through a catch-up with James, who's our brilliant CTO, and a friend I met during my university days. The work was fascinating, the team was fantastic, and, to top it off, this was the exact industry I had been eager to dive into. So, joining Smarter Contracts felt like the most logical decision, and I couldn't be happier about it!
